About

Get The Fork Out is Abby Armada and Reid Smith. Both of us are West Coast transplants living in suburbia on the north shore of Long Island with two cats, Mr. Tang and Kyuubi. We obviously love food and cooking,  but we also love video games, crafty things of all kinds, science and comic books.

We’re going to try and be brief here: Get The Fork Out is a food blog about living, cooking and eating from a great town on Long Island. Nothing too fussy, always honest, and we promise that Abby will stop talking about how there are no good Mexican food places around.

Hurr Abby HurrrrrrAbout Abby: Abby is a short twenty-something from Los Angeles, CA who only made her first pie crust when she was eighteen (it wasn’t exactly a disaster and the subsequent raspberry rhubarb pie was delicious). She only started cooking seriously when she moved to Long Island with Reid, wherein she started again to stave off the hunger and depression. She knew Reid was the one for her when in Seattle, he made her a bagel sandwich with a fried egg and bacon with jam. She currently works for a big siren corporation making a lot of coffee.

Likes: 100% Kona coffee, organic gardening, Anthony Bourdain, video games, sewing, Humboldt Fog cheese, pork, mushrooms (likes them as much as Reid hates them), Harry Potter, our cats, garlic, pie crusts, books.

Dislikes: olives, recipes with too many steps/dishes/appliances, high fructose corn syrup, food snobs, Fairway on Saturday afternoons, the lack of good Mexican food in New York.

Stuff she never tried till moving: escarole, kale chips, black and white cookies.

Spice tolerance: high.

About Reid: Mr. Tang and ReidI work in physics, where I help operate a particle-accelerator (just like the one at CERN in Switzerland, but smaller, and all of the wacky protestors have already forgotten about us!)

I adore cats, and enjoy screamy-music, ninjas/manga, Street Fighter, and reading up on science and/or video games.

Though I’ve never been verbose enough to proclaim myself a great cook or a “foodie”, I’m a pretty big fan both of cooking for myself and eating tasty things.  I especially like simple dishes, and make a pretty mean stir-fry. I absolutely love ginger and I will probably subject you to a lot of writing about it. It’s no secret that I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to spiciness, but I’m getting better about that.  Also, I abhor mushrooms  (sorry, not up for debate).

I grew up in Spokane, WA where there is little ethnic food, so when I moved to Seattle for college, my food-horizons literally expanded exponentially. In the past few years, Abby has introduced me to even more new things, both in ethnicity and preparational-complexity.

I’m game to try pretty much anything once (or twice, or…), and I’m pretty sure that’s what we’re aiming for!

If you like what you see here, please follow our feed and keep up with us! We’d love to have you.

Cats: From a colony of cats in a barn somewhere upstate, Mr. Tang and Kyuubi (Kew-bee) are brothers. Mr. Tang likes string cheese and licking. Kyuubi enjoys the space between the door and the wall, and making biscuits.

Our clean table.
Mr. Tang. Pizza Kyuubs.

We promise we won’t write about them (much).
